‘Let them eat Teslas’

The same people who want coal miners to learn to code now tell struggling families to buy electric cars

As gas prices soar, America’s elites have a message for the disgruntled masses: buy an electric vehicle, stupid.

Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg appeared at a press event with Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday where the dynamic duo lectured Americans on the importance of going green.

Buttigieg proudly boasted from the podium, “Last month, we announced a $5 billion investment to build out a nationwide electric vehicle-charging network so that people from rural, to suburban, to urban communities can all benefit from the gas savings of driving an EV.”

While some critics found the sermon tone-deaf, others applauded the secretary’s sentiment.

Democrat cheerleader and political pundit Stephen Colbert, who reportedly makes $15 million a year, condescendingly explained to his audience why he doesn’t mind paying more for gas.

“Today, the average gas price in America hit an all-time record high of over $4 a gallon. OK, that stings, but a clean conscience is worth a buck or two. It’s important.”

Colbert’s “clean conscience” remark sounds eerily similar to Biden’s recent warning to Americans that “defending freedom will have costs for us as well, and here at home.”

The president, who was in denial about the price of gas until a few weeks ago, is finally willing to acknowledge the pain Americans are feeling at the pump. The reason for the sudden switch-up is that Joe thinks he can blame gas prices (which have been steadily increasing throughout his presidency) entirely on Putin. Luckily for the president, the liberal media is more than willing to parrot this propaganda and gaslight Americans.

But Colbert’s stand-up routine got even worse. His next comment was painfully out-of-touch — even for him.

“I’m willing to pay $4 a gallon. Hell, I’ll pay $15 a gallon because I drive a Tesla.”

The host’s disconnect highlights the classist mentality of America’s woke and wealthy elites. The same beautiful people who were telling coal miners to learn to code are now telling struggling families to buy a Tesla.

And Colbert, like Secretary Buttigieg and energy secretary Jennifer Granholm, is not telling the full story when it comes to the downsides of electric vehicles.

In July 2021, the Los Angeles Times published a piece titled, “California’s electric car revolution, designed to save the planet, also unleashes a toll on it.”

What is the toll of trying to produce electric batteries to power green cars that will save the planet? Well, mining for the rare metals that make up electric car batteries — cobalt, lithium, manganese, nickel —  often means ripping up forests, destroying Native American ancestral sites and polluting the earth in the process. The article also points out that “China controls most of the market for the raw-material refining needed for the batteries.” Would making America more dependent on China bother any of the greenies in Hollywood or DC?

While the sanctimonious drivers of these EVs might be perfect, the vehicles themselves are far from it.

The White House, though, is pressing on. “When we have electric cars powered by clean energy, we will never have to worry about gas prices again,” reads a tweet from their account this morning. “And autocrats like Putin won’t be able to use fossil fuels as weapons against other nations.”
